Poor D hands Pitt first Big East loss

Well, Pitt will have to wait until next year to start Big East play 6-0. The #11 Panthers(15-3)(5-1) were beat by 8 points in their first conference loss at the hands of the Georgetown Hoyas(14-3)(5-2). The final 74-66 is disturbing in one way: Georgetown scored 74 points! Pitt was giving up an average of 59.1 coming into the game that will change after tonight. Again and again Chris Wright(who led all scorers with 27) was able to drive to the basket of was wide open for the 3-point shot. Pitt’s help defense was very poor, and I don’t like to point fingers but Gary McGhee has to improve his defensive game or the big men for the opposition will control the game.

Junior guard Chris Wright plowed through Pitt's D with 27 points

Georgtown’s Greg Monroe dominated down low all game and really exposed Pitt’s biggest weakest: post play. He had 13 points, but the bigger stat is his 11 rebounds, most of them coming from Pitt’s post players getting pinned out of position. Ashton Gibbs was held to eight, but his fellow guard Gilbert Brown exploded in the second half with 20 points on the night. It wasn’t enough though and now Pitt’s heading into the Seton Hall 1/2 a game back for the lead in the Big East and will drop in the rankings. Pitt should not hang their head though, they need to improve their defense and get back on track.

Go Pitt.
